Every Woman’s Guide to Lipstick and lipgloss.
Like applying flawless foundation, lipstick and glosses can be a bit tricky. Ladies, the truth is that Any woman can wear lip color. The key to rocking a bold lip color is finding the right shade for your skin tone, and after that, how you wear it. (It’s all about confidence!) To help you first-timers who might be nervous about trying lip color, here a guide to help you graduate from Rookie to Expert.
As always you are most welcome to share this article with the women in your life you feel will benefit from it.
1. Start off Slow
If you are a beginner, start off slow with a nude, light or dark brown lip gloss or lipstick. While these may not add that much color to your lips, it will get you accustomed to the feeling of having product (and color!) on your pout. You will realize that a little color on your lips makes a world of difference to your overal look.
2. Match your skin tone
Unfortunately not all shades complement every skin tone. Red lipstick alone has such a wide variety! Complexions vary just as much as lipstick shades, so my advice is to always test colors against your skin before you make a decision.
If you are light skinned try out pale to deep pink, Peach, Taupe and Red.
For medium-toned skin (olive to caramel), experiment with Red, medium to deep Pink, Bronze, Magenta, and medium to deep Brown.
For dark and rich complexions, try out Deep red, Fuchsia, Magenta, Chocolate brown and Bronze.
3. Lipstick Vs. Lip gloss
a. Lip glosses
Lip gloss is a basic beauty product that every woman should have on hand. A clear or tinted lip gloss (for those who want that extra pop of color) can do everything from highlight a natural lip color to put the finishing touches on a proven lip color routine. Women who are just beginning to get themselves used to the idea of makeup find a simple clear lip gloss to be a non-threatening, easy transition. It can truly be the only lip product a woman will ever need to keep in her bag or pocket.
b. Lipsticks
Whether satin or matte, lipsticks provide full coverage giving a polished effect to your makeup look. Lipsticks are ideal for evening, work, or anytime you want to look put together or “done”.
Matte lipsticks are quite on trend mostly because of the variety of rich colors but also because of their staying power. The down side of matte lipsticks however is that they have a tendency to dry out your lips and over time they leave your lips cracked. To counter this be sure to exfoliate your lips often and moisturize your lips before applying your matte lipstick.
4. To Line or not to line
Next to mascara, lip liner is the one product when applied correctly gives your makeup look that extra edge.
Avoid the tendency to overdraw your lip line as it appears harsh and exaggerated. Lip liner should always be one shade darker than your natural lip color, or a shade darker or lighter than your gloss or lipstick of choice.
Subtle liner makes lips appear fuller, younger, and more defined. Most importantly, lip liner gives lip gloss and lipstick something to adhere to, therefore increasing staying power and preventing color from bleeding into fine lines.
